Expertise & Resources

Experience

Through working on a series of diverse projects, NM & Associates has gained extensive experience in the planning, urban design and architectural domain, directing complex development processes, informing and compiling spatial strategies and frameworks and implementing projects on the ground that address a range of needs and challenges.

The company works mainly in the Cape Metropolitan Area and Western Cape, however NM & Associates have also done work over the years in other provinces including Gauteng, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and Free State. The company has also undertaken work in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo.  Our work includes commissions from local government, provincial government, national government, the private and NGO sectors.

The practise has over the years gained considerable specific experience in the following:

Airport planning

NM & Associates has worked on seven different airports across the country including Cape Town International Airport where it has been supporting ACSA to enable and facilitate its property management and master planning for their airside and landside developments since 1996.

Land Restitution projects

NM & Associates have worked on several land restitution projects for different communities across the Western Cape, the most significant being District Six.

Integrated Public Transport Network planning

NM & Associates have been involved from the early days in the planning of urban corridors and public transport systems that support more viable urban settlements. They have worked in large professional teams on complex land use modelling exercises, bus and Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) network identification and infrastructure design projects. The practise has delivered public transport interchanges and NMT facilities under the leadership of the architectural team.

Social, Educational and Health related Infrastructure planning and design

NM & Associates have been the lead architects on a number of key public facilities and institutions in Cape Town (such as the District Six Community Health Centre) where their concern for the wellbeing of local communities and future user-groups has informed their considered design responses to challenging spatial and political contexts. Special care has been given in all the architectural assignments to the public domain and the interface between the site and the public spatial realm.

Integrated public precinct planning and design

It has, over the last years, become increasingly important for government to utilise the land over which they have custodianship, more effectively to address a range of developmental needs. NM & Associates has worked closely with local and provincial government to plan for the delivery of public services in a more integrated manner on strategically located land parcels. This has required working closely with owner and user departments and employing the package of plans approach to accommodate flexibility and phasing in the implementation stages of precinct scale projects.
