The Project Challenge
The overarching objective of the study was to provide a restructured integrated public transport (PT) network for Klipfontein Corridor (Klipcor) that is not only efficient, but also integrates environmental concerns, urban development opportunities, technical considerations and appropriate spatial and infrastructural design.

Principles & Approaches
The approach moves towards a philosophy based on urban restructuring principles that seek to integrate people, space, activity and movement. The goals for Klipcor are:
- Spatial restructuring of the current fragmented landscape and creation of integrated environments;
- Facilitation and improvement of access and movement for all NMT and PT users;
- The creation of safe zones and secure environments at all PT facilities and stops, whilst providing viable public spaces that encourage social and economic interaction;
- The creation of a clear and legible hierarchy of PT facilities and stops;
- The creation of a PT system that addresses universal access design;
- The enhancement of urban generator nodes through appropriate land use development and controls; and
- The development of short-term investment opportunities to ensure long-term socio-economic growth.
A detailed public participation process and engagement with key stakeholders occurred in March, April and June of 2006. The Phase 1 Pilot Project consisting of 24 units has been constructed on site and handed over to elderly claimants.

Proposals
There are four interrelated layers of opportunity within of the Klipcor Integrated Transport Network Plan (ITNP):
- A non-motorised transport (NMT) plan that promotes access and integration in local areas where people walk and cycle to destinations.
- Socio-spatial generators that produce high thresholds of people and encourage economic activity, further supporting the prospect of public and private investment.
- Public transport networks (inclusive of line haul and community services) and associated infrastructure are vital for a viable and functioning system which is a valuable public asset allowing access to all.
- Appropriate land-uses at key locations.
